Global Day of Prayer - Beverley Minster
HPSS were asked to provide Sound and AV for the Global Day of Prayer event at Beverley Minster. David Hill (of There is Hope) contacted us in the early stages of planning to discuss their requirements. Whilst the Minster has a bespoke column loudpseaker system, it was soon clear that this system wasn’t suitable for the event, due to the involvement of a fairly large worship band.
It was also clear that due to numbers expected and the layout of the building, a substantial AV system would also be required, to allow everyone in the congregation to see the event.
With any event of this type clarity of speech / vocals is of paramount importance. With the Minster having a reverb time in excess of 4 seconds, providing even and consistant coverage, was going to be critical to the success of the event.
Based on a wide experience of similar events, technical manager Iain Firth designed a distributed system centered around our new Yamaha M7-CL and L-Acoustics 115 HiQ loudpseakers. The system was modelled with L-Acoustics Soundvision software, which assisted in predicting coverage prior to the event. The 115XT HiQ’s were selected for the role due to their fantastic tonality and tightly controlled dispersion. At FOH these were used in conjunction with SB118’s. Three sets of delays were placed along the length of the Minster, with two sets of outfills (to cover the side aisles).
Due to other events at the Minster, setup & soundcheck time was limited to a 4.5hr window, between the morning service and start of seminars, before the main service at 6.30pm. For this reason, the M7-CL was chosen as the FOH desk. After working with the worship band at previous events on the M7-CL and modelling the Minster in Soundvision, Iain Firth was able pre-program the M7-CL (including all delay times) to reduce setup time to an absolute minimum. Dave Cartwright also heavily prep’d the system to ensure cable runs were ready out of box, again keeping installation time to a bare minimum.
Alongside the usual suspects for amplifying the worship band three Shure ULXP radio systems were used to provide general speech microphones. Two of which were B58 handhelds with the microphone for the main speaker being a DPA4066 headset.
The AV system was again designed by Iain Firth and comprised of 3 rear projection screens – one 12ft by 9ft screen and two 8ft by 6ft screens for the side aisles. Due to the possibility of high light levels during the event a 10,000 lumen projector was used on the main screen and two 3300 lumen projectors were used on the side screens. Vision mixing was provided by a Panasonic MX50 which was used to mix between two live camera’s, DVD playback and a laptop running song words and other text. Equipment for the AV system was supplied by Saville AV of Hull. Camera’s, Cameramen and Vision mixing were supplied by Classlane Media.
The de-rig after the event was as swift as the get in with the Minster being clear just over one hour from the end of the service.
FOH sound for the event was engineered by Iain Firth and David Cartwright was on system tech duties. Monitors were mixed by Andrew Appleyard from b4U along with his Yamaha 01V & Mackie SRM350’s. Many thanks to John and all the staff from the Minster for their help and assistance with the planning and execution of the whole event.
