HPSS provide PA System for Muscular Dystrophy Campaign 50th Anniversary Service
As part of MDC’s 50th Anniversary year HPSS were approached to co-ordinate technical provision for their flagship event at York Minster on the 5th June. With the concert being a sell out event and such calibre of artistes performing as Katherine Jenkins and Faryl Smith the PA system for the event needed to provide consistent and highly intelligible coverage over the entire nave section of the minster…. not an easy task given the scale and highly reverberant nature of the building!
HPSS liaised with both MDC and York Minster extensively during the run up to the event ensuring the Minsters strict Health & Safety policies were adhered to. HPSS ensured PAT certificates from all contractors on site were submitted in good time along with risk assessments, insurance certification etc.
Based on previous work at the minster a distributed system utilising a combination of L Acoustics ARC’s / HiQ’s and d&B Ci80’s were used to provide coverage over the entire nave area. The system was in part modelled prior to arriving on site using L Acoustics’ proprietary modelling software, Soundvision.
Amplifiers used were a combinations of L Acoustic LA8’s, Camco Vortex and d&B E-PAC and D12’s.
No less than 12 separate delay lines were used all controlled via a Yamaha M7CL. To facilitate all the high number of outputs required when taking into account AV feeds, Wedge & IEM monitor feeds an additional MY8-ADDA96 card was installed in the board prior to the event from hire stock. This also allowed the two Avalon VT-737SP pre amplifiers used on the main vocal mics to be brought directly into the M7CL bypassing the internal mic preamps.
Two pairs of L Acoustic 108P’s were used to provide on stage monitoring selected both because of their low profile and outstanding sound. Sennheiser G2 IEM sets were supplied for use by the vocalists performing to assist with monitoring in such a complex acoustic.
Once setup, the system was time-aligned and tuned to ensure every member of the audience received as consistent a sound as possible. A task which is both time consuming and potentially gave our engineers more exercise than they had all month.
The event was a resounding success with a capacity audience enjoying outstanding performances from Katherine Jenkins, Faryl Smith, Alexei Kalveks & the Rodillian Singers.
